How Massage Relieves Tension Headaches

headaches-grand-junctionPicture for a moment… You have been at work staring at a computer screen. You massage your temples for temporary relief. It has been four hours and now you have a raging headache suddenly focusing on your job at hand becomes increasingly difficult. You just experienced eye strain. Eye strain is caused by focusing on an activity intensely like a computer or smartphone screen, driving, or reading a book. Eye strain is one of the few ways to cause tension headaches.

Headaches are common

Does this sound like you? Most likely it does because 80-90% of the population will at least experience 1 or more tension headaches in their life. Yes, it is true that some of the counter medications can help and even drugs but they come with their own long list of side effects. When the meds wear off sometimes the headache is still there and you are left to take more and more medicine for the same temporary relief. You find yourself in a constant cycle.

What you can do at home

The best thing you can do at home is to find a calm comfortable position and reduce stimulations around you. Turn your phone off, and find a relaxing position while practicing deep breathing exercises. Furthermore, dring water may help too.

How massage is an effective tool for tension headaches

When you have a tension headache it means that the muscles in your head and neck are contracting and causing pain. Massage is a great way to relieve the pain. With massage, you can loosen and lengthen the contracting muscles to decrease the pain and the need for medication. Massage also helps regulate hormones and improve circulation both of which play a huge role in headaches.

What should I do?

If you have headaches talk to your massage therapist about where, how often, and what you do to relieve them. Your massage therapist might have a few tricks up their sleeve to relieve the intensity of and frequency of the pain.
