The kitchen is often the center of your home. It is where everyone congregates at the end of the day to catch up with each other. You chat while you work on preparing dinner. It is a time for connections and learning. Often your parents teach you how to cook. That includes how to make a roux, bake bread, boil bones for soup and timing Thanksgiving dinner so that it all ends up on the table at the same time. Without even knowing it you’re learning wisdom in how to nourish yourself and our family.
Today the skill of cooking at home is quickly dying. So much of our “food” is prepared in factories, dumped from a box or picked up at a fast food restaurant. We are forgetting how to nourish our bodies and our bodies are paying the price. There is a huge difference between feeding and nourishing. Properly nourished bodies enjoy more wellness and health. Bodies that are fed with poor quality, nutrient poor foods are more susceptible to illness and disease, and far less able to combat it when it does strike. Our bodies need essential nutrients to maintain health and help us recover when we do get sick.
Cook at home
If you want to improve your health and the health of your family it is important that you cook food at home. I am talking about real food like meat, veggies, fruits, whole grain, nuts and seeds, and spices. When you eat from a box or a restaurant you do not really know what you are eating. How do you truly know and understood all the things that have been added to and taken away from your food? Hint -it would help to be a chemist! However, it is easy to look around to see the results on our health.
If you don’t know how to cook – learn!
The thought of cooking at home may make you break out in a cold sweat! If you were never taught how to cook it can be a daunting idea. I get that! The good news is that there is information everywhere that can help. If you prefer a classroom setting to learn, sign up for a cooking class. If you know someone who can cook, and likes you, ask them if they will teach you. Pick one dish that you enjoy and go online and look for YouTube videos on how to make it. Experiment! Do not be afraid of failing. Have you ever gone to a restaurant and paid $3o for an awful meal? Just don’t leave yourself a tip if it is terrible! Cooking tasty food is a skill. There are techniques that you will need to learn but just keep trying.
After you learn to cook, learn to LOVE it!
You do not actually have to learn to love to cook. There is no food police that is going to come and take you away if you don’t. We can tell you that loving to cook opens up a whole new world for you and your family. It can bring lots of joy and variety and excitement for the whole family. Eating the same few foods over and over is not only boring but it can leave us with nutritional deficits. Lots of variety gives our bodies more of what they really need, even if we do not know what that is.
