Each night you go to sleep with intentions of healthy eating the next day. You really want to look and feel better. Its been on your mind for a long time. However, the next morning you forget that you need a little extra time. After hitting the snooze button 3 times you finally get out of bed. There is no time to make a wholesome meal so you grab a cup of coffee and a piece of toast as you run out the door.
Middle of the morning you can hardly think so you grab another cup of coffee and a snickers bar. In an attempt to salvage the day you make plans to go with your office mate to the “Greens are Great” restaurant for lunch. About 11:30 your boss sticks his head in the door and says he needs you to work through lunch on some big important deal. You grab a bag of peanuts and another cup of coffee.
Six o’clock rolls around and you walk back in the front door and you are starving! You start eating the minute you kick off your shoes and don’t stop until bedtime. Roughly 2500 calories later you finally lay down to go to sleep with intentions of eating healthy starting the next day.
Be like a Girl Scout and be prepared
You will never be able remove all the unexpected events from your life. After all, that is just life. Stuff happens and sometimes it happens in spades. So if you want to make changes, what are you to do? Be prepared! Think and plan ahead about how you are going to nourish your body. Set yourself up to succeed.
The weekend (or anytime) ritual
In order to eat nourishing food you have to purchase and prepare nourishing food. This means having a kitchen and refrigerator that is well stocked with fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. If you work during the week this may mean that you need to set aside a few hours on the weekend to shop and prep. Having a couple of days worth of veggies washed and chopped, makes meal prep easier. You can still make a nutritious breakfast by throwing some of those chopped veggies in a skillet with a couple of eggs. If you don’t have even that much time, grab a couple handfuls of spinach and add it to a protein shake. It does not take much time and it will sustain you much better than coffee and toast.
Finger foods are the bomb – carry them with you
Carry a lunch box. If you want to be assured that you have healthy choices during the day you should carry them with you. Here are some ideas of foods that will nourish you. Most of them could even be eaten at your desk if you should happen to get stuck there or in your car traveling between appointments.
