Since adding Instrument Assisted Soft-tissue Mobilization (IASTM) the results with Graston technique we’re seeing are impressive. Our clinic has always offered quality soft-tissue treatment options, specifically with Active Release Technique and transverse friction. Adding an IASTM treatment has given our patients more options plus better results.
What is IASTM and Graston?
Graston technique is an evidence based instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) technique that effectively treats scar tissue and fascial restrictions. IASTM improves range of motion and promotes healthy tissue remodeling. This technique uses stainless instruments that the clinician glides across the injured area.
What can IASTM help?
We’re applying IASTM to patients with acute, chronic and post-surgical scar tissue. Acute injuries usually require the least aggressive treatment. We’re applying both IASTM and Active Release Techniques in these cases and seeing positive results.
In patients with chronic scar tissue IASTM is helpful for beginning remodeling the tissue to become more functional. An analogy that is helpful to picture what is happening with your tissue is to think of a home remodel. Before you can erect new walls you need to ‘demo’ what’s already there. Graston or IASTM is helpful for initiating the remodeling process.
Results with Graston
Here are a couple examples of people who are benefiting from IASTM and Graston in Grand Junction, Colorado
- A late 20 year old athletic individual who presented after three shoulder surgeries. The patient has been under traditional physical therapy for years with little help. Before care they felt vulnerable in their shoulder but is motivated to lift weights. The initial response was better objectively than subjectively. There was improvement in the tone and texture of the tissue plus range of motion. It has taken a couple months to help their stability. Now, the patient is lifting weights and is optimistic with their progress.
- A middle aged patient required a total knee replacement surgery after a motorcycle accident. The patient presented with significant pain and limited range of motion in the knee. There were quick improvements in the patient’s pain severity and their requirement for prescription pain medication was cut in 1/2 within 2 weeks of starting care. They’re still progressing with care and knee extension is near full and pain free.
- Plantar fasciitis otherwise known as PF. We’ve applied IASTM to many patients with PF. All are reporting significant immediate improvement. However some patients prefer Active Release Techniques over IASTM.
- A patient sustained torn ligaments and broken leg in their high school athletic career. Their leg has never been the same. The patient had their ankle twisted 180 degrees. Surgery helped stabilize the ankle however after 15 years the ankle and lower leg have developed significant scar tissue. As a result combining IASTM in the office with complimentary home care instructions has the patient running and hiking on their leg.
