The Top 2019 Highlight at COOR Wellness happened the with the first patient of the day, on the last day of the year. This patient is already undercare by a chiropractor in her home town an hour and a half drive from Grand Junction. What she said was significant and we hope all our patients understand why it was the Top 2019 Highlight at COOR Wellness.
High Risk
This patient is pregnant and has Type 1 Diabetes. They’re already a ‘high risk’ pregnancy with that and to top it off she’s having recurring lower back pain. She claims it improves after receiving an adjustment however it’ll “go back out” frequently. The only thing that seems to help is getting another adjustment.
In her phone consultation she let us know that the drive is an issue. To come in for an appointment, it requires a 90 minute drive through the mountains. This isn’t ideal for Type 1 diabetic who is pregnant. Before coming in, we explained the COOR Wellness philosophy toward pregnant patients and only making appointments when they’re 100% necessary.
More than anything, this patient was informed that her lower back and hip joints were stiff, not ‘out of alignment’. And this is key.
Objective Findings
This patient’s exam had more positives to mark than finding that need assistance. Her range of motion shows good mobility in her neck and shoulders; her hips are moving well and her posture is great. She has a couple areas of her lower back that will move better with exercises, stretches, massage and chiropractic. But by no means is there reason for weekly visit to her chiropractor. Lately, she’s been feeling like she needs to go twice a week. That’s $90 per week!
I’m Not Broken
She knows going forward that when her hips feel stiff and lower back “feels out” that doing her home stretches will be her first line of defense. She can use these first to improve her symptoms, and when that’s not enough she can schedule if it’s truly necessary.
Our eyes lit up and our Top 2019 Highlight happened when she reported, “I’m not broken”.
This is what we want our patients to know more than anything else: when you’re challenged, whether it be pain, weight gain or seasonal stiffness – you’re not broken. You may have physical challenges, but with help and taking action you can improve.
