Simon Says – Do your squats
Often when we’re progressing a low back pain patient’s home exercise program we refer back to an old memory game called Simon. Simon is a game where this electronic board lights up four different colors and you have to remember the pattern. The Simon games comes to mind whenever we’re helping someone recover from back pain.
People with back pain usually have poor control over their spine and hip. And one of the most useful motions we have is hindered; that movement is squatting. After a thorough assessment we offer the right interventions for the person’s back pain. Once the patient is better, we like to make sure they can squat.
Now, most people think of air squats (without weight) or back squats, with a barbell on their shoulders. Those are two great functional tests and exercises. But the spine and it’s supporting muscles are complex and we like to load the spine in different quadrants.
